SEO earns you a position in a list of links that a person then chooses from. GEO earns you a mention inside an answer that a model has already written. One competes for a click, the other competes for the sentence that decides whether a click happens at all.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No, it sits on top of it. Most assistants build their answers from pages they discovered through ordinary search indexes, so a site that ranks nowhere is usually quoted nowhere. In practice GEO is what you add once the SEO foundation is solid, not a substitute for building one.
