The Three Times Multiplier
Industry research in 2026 puts the citation multiplier on review platform pages at roughly three times a comparable page on your own domain. Same product, same claim, three times the weight, purely because of where it sits.
Ten words from a stranger outrank a thousand from you. That is the entire finding, and most of the discomfort it causes comes from how much effort companies put into the thousand.
Why the Author Changes Everything
A model reading your site is reading a claim. A model reading a review is reading evidence. Those are different categories of information and they are weighted differently, which is rational rather than unfair.
You have an obvious incentive to describe your product favourably. A user does not, which is why their sentence survives scrutiny that yours does not. This is the same mechanism that makes a place on somebody else's list worth more than a list you publish yourself.
| Source | How a model treats it | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Your own product page | A claim by an interested party | Baseline |
| A testimonial on your own site | A claim you selected and published | Barely above baseline |
| A review on a third party platform | Evidence from an identifiable stranger | Roughly three times |
| A pattern across many reviews | Corroboration, not a single opinion | Strongest available |
Which Platforms Actually Carry Weight
Not the brand of the platform, the format of the page. What makes a review page citeable is that it carries a named product, a rating, a date, and a body of text attributable to somebody other than the vendor. In software that usually means G2, Capterra and Trustpilot, and in other categories it will be whichever site holds those four properties.
The test to apply before investing in a platform
Ask an assistant your category's buying question and look at which sources it names. If a platform never appears, its reviews are not reaching the answer layer, whatever its traffic looks like.
What You Cannot Do
You cannot manufacture this, and the attempt is usually visible. Platforms detect review clusters. Models weight recency and distribution. A page of uniformly enthusiastic reviews written in the same fortnight in the same register reads as manufactured to both, and the correction is worse than the original absence.
The pattern that gets discounted
Twenty five star reviews inside three weeks, no detail, no use case, no complaints. Fifteen genuine reviews across a year with two complaints in them is a stronger asset, because a mixed profile is what a real product looks like.
How to Get Real Reviews Without Buying Them
Ask at the moment of value, not on a schedule
Somebody who just finished the task your product exists for will describe it well. The same person asked three weeks later writes two generic sentences.
Ask for the use case, not the rating
A specific request produces a specific answer. Tell me what you used it for gets you a quotable sentence. Please leave us a review gets you five stars and no text, which carries almost nothing.
Make it one click from where they already are
Every extra step halves the response. A link in the product at the right moment beats an email campaign by a wide margin.
Never script it
Reviews that share phrasing are the clearest manufacturing signal there is, and the phrasing you suggest is the phrasing that gets flagged.
Reply to the critical ones in public
The reply is part of the page a model reads. A specific, non defensive answer to a complaint is frequently the most useful sentence on the whole profile.
Negative Reviews Are Not the Problem
A mixed profile reads as genuine and it gives a model the material to describe who your product suits and who it does not. That produces better targeted recommendations, which means fewer users arriving with wrong expectations.
What actually damages you is appearing on a category page with no reviews at all beside competitors who have them. Absence is read as either new or avoided, and neither helps. Compared with that, a four star average with two honest complaints is a strong position.
The Honest Limit
This is the one area of AI visibility where the work cannot be shortcut by publishing something. You can write your way onto listicles, into transcripts and into other languages. You cannot write your way into other people's opinions of your product.
We have never published an invented rating on any of the tools in our portfolio, and the reason is not only ethics. A fabricated ratings block is one of the easiest things to detect and one of the hardest reputations to repair once a model has learned to distrust your pages. The multiplier is three times in your favour when the reviews are real, and it points the other way when they are not.
