The Twenty Times Gap
Industry measurements in 2026 put Perplexity's brand citation rate at roughly 13% against ChatGPT's 0.6%. That is not a rounding difference, it is a different relationship with brands entirely, and the largest single explanation is where each engine looks.
Perplexity leans heavily on recent community discussion. ChatGPT skews encyclopedic, though even there Wikipedia and Reddit together account for more than a quarter of citations. Whichever engine you care about, community discussion is a substantial share of what gets quoted about your category.
Why Reddit Specifically
Reddit supplies two things models are structurally short of, and no amount of publishing on your own domain provides either.
Recency
Threads carry dates and stay active. When somebody asks what is good right now, a discussion from last month is a better source than a page last updated two years ago, whatever that page's authority.
Unpaid opinion
The author is not selling anything. A model weighing whether a product is actually good treats a stranger's account of using it differently from a vendor's account of building it.
Question shaped titles
Reddit threads are literally named after the questions people ask, which makes them unusually easy to match against a prompt.
What You Cannot Do Here
You cannot buy your way in, and that is exactly why it counts. Communities remove promotional posts, accounts that exist to market get banned, and a thread that reads as placement is deleted by a moderator who owes you nothing.
If somebody is selling you Reddit placements
They are either using purchased accounts, which gets the thread removed and can get the brand named in the removal, or they are describing something that is not Reddit. There is no compliant way to buy a genuine community mention, which is the whole source of its value.
What Actually Works
The mentions that get cited are written by other people. So the goal is not to place a message, it is to be the sort of thing people mention. That is slower and it is also the only version that survives.
Find the three or four communities where your category is actually discussed
Not the biggest subreddits, the ones where somebody asks your category question weekly. There are usually fewer than five and they are easy to find by searching your own category question.
Answer questions without linking to yourself
For long enough that answering is normal rather than a campaign. This is the part most companies skip and it is the part that makes everything after it possible.
Disclose plainly when your product is relevant
Say you built it. Communities are far more tolerant of a disclosed founder answering a direct question than of a neutral sounding account that turns out to be the vendor.
Make your product easy to describe in one sentence
People recommend what they can summarise. If your own homepage cannot say what the product does in a line, nobody in a thread will manage it either.
Answer the criticism too
A founder responding well to a complaint produces a thread that gets cited for years, because it is exactly the kind of evidence a model is looking for when somebody asks whether a company is any good.
The Decay Problem
Here is the part that makes community presence different from every other visibility asset you own. A backlink mostly does not decay. A community mention does.
Recency is a large component of why these sources get pulled into answers at all, so a two year old thread saying you are good is a materially weaker signal than a recent one. The practical implication is uncomfortable: this is not a project you complete. If you stop showing up, the citations thin out over a year without anything visibly breaking.
The Mistakes That Get Threads Removed
| Mistake | What happens |
|---|---|
| A new account posting about one product | Removed as spam, sometimes with the brand named |
| Several accounts agreeing with each other | Detected as vote manipulation, can affect the domain |
| A neutral sounding account that is the vendor | Worst outcome, because the correction thread outranks the original |
| Linking on every answer | Shadow limited, and the answers stop appearing |
| Replying only to positive threads | Reads as managed, and the negative threads stay uncontested |
How to Measure Any of This
Do not measure Reddit traffic, because it will be small and it will tell you nothing about whether the work is paying. Measure whether the assistants that lean on community sources have started naming you.
Run your category's buying questions on a schedule, record whether your brand appears and what is said about it, and watch the sources named underneath. That is the measurement that matches this work, and it moves months before any analytics dashboard does.
